Giving back to the community: How we work to support our local economy

After 35 years of business, we’re proud to say that we have forged some pretty strong relationships within our local community. In fact, a huge part of what we do here at Graylaw Freight is working with other businesses, and giving back to the community we have been a part of since 1994, when we first moved into our Skelmersdale head office.

We have both contributed and benefited from our close involvement with the community over the years. So much so that 85% of our employees live within a 3-mile radius of Skelmersdale. Today, we want to highlight some of what we do to give back and to help grow the local economy for the future.

Skelmersdale ambassadors

We have been part of the Skelmersdale ambassadors programme for 18 months now, and in that time, we have seen first-hand the innovation and power behind our local community.

We are proud of where we are from, and as such are over joyed to be part of this established network of advocates, working together to bring investment, business and visitors to Skelmersdale and the surrounding areas.

West Lancashire College

We are partners with West Lancashire College, with our Chief Executive, Harry Hill being a member of the college board. Having worked with them closely for around five years now, we were recently lucky enough to contribute our industry knowledge and expertise to support the college in opening their brand-new logistics centre.

Apprenticeships

We have been offering apprenticeships to students through West Lancashire college for a number of years now. During this time, we have found that a huge number of students who do their apprenticeships with us stay on as part of our company, building their careers with us at Graylaw for years to come.

We offer apprenticeships in the majority of sectors within our company, from logistics experts to warehouse operatives, and more.

We have found that the apprenticeship programme has helped us to grow as a business with exceptional team members, as well as offering talented individuals a future in their desired industry.

Want to know more about our apprenticeship programme? Here are our answers to some of your most frequently asked questions:

WHICH TYPE OF APPRENTICESHIPS DO YOU OFFER?
Our apprenticeships vary from Business Administration & Customer Services to Mechanics.

We generally look for Intermediate level candidates, School / College Leavers looking for an introduction into the workplace.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO HIRE AN APPRENTICE?
To offer opportunities for keen candidates to progress in an ever-expanding industry with a company with over 30 years of experience.

WHAT BENEFITS HAS YOUR COMPANY SEEN FROM HIRING APPRENTICES?
We have seen many apprentices grow and develop personally on the apprenticeship program. As a company we benefit from the versatility in candidate abilities to progress within the various different roles in this industry.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT BECOMING OR HIRING AN APPRENTICE?
I would suggest to potential candidates that they need not to worry too much about the grades they achieved in school or college. Most employers are just looking for candidates that are eager to learn with a ‘want to succeed’ attitude.

I would advise potential employers to remember that they need to nurture apprentices and help them develop over time which needs dedication from both sides.
