1. Register for an EORI number (your customers in the EU will also need to register for an EORI number if they haven’t already).
2. Ensure your EORI is on all commercial documentation. The following information also needs to be on your documentation.
– Country of origin
– Product description
– Commodity codes
– Consignment value
– Consignment weight and dimensions
– Full consignee details
3. Ensure you know the commodity code of your goods. Click here for help with this.
4. You also need to know the customs procedure code for your goods. Click here for guidance.
5. Agree on Incoterms with your customers. Find out more about this here.
6. Apply for a deferment account to delay payment of your import duties and VAT for up to 46 days. Click here for help with this.
7. Ensure you keep records over the last six years of all your traded goods declared to HMRC for duty and tax purposes.
8. For some types of goods being exported from the UK a license or certificate will be required, you can find more information about this here. To see if this applies to your business, Click here.
